Cowes - Royal Yacht Squadron and Green

Isle of Wight

Old postcards are sometimes poorly produced and grainy, I've done my best to scan them. Please click thumbnails for full size picture. Dates are from the card or my estimate (where possible). The manufacturer of the card is shown in brackets (where available).

RYS by turner

A 1930's card of a painting (in the National Gallery) by Turner of the Royal Yacht Squadron. I haven't yet determined the exact date the picture was painted but it was between 1833 and 1851.

Cowes Green

Grantham Hotel, Cowes

Cowes umbrella tree

An undated card of the Grantham Hotel next to the Green,  demolished in 1990 and replaced by an apartment block, like a number of other properties in this area.

Looking west across the Green, 1905. The supported tree is a

weeping ash, know as the 'umbrella tree' reputedly planted in 1796

(and still there!). There is a similar tree outside East Cowes Town Hall. (Wrench)

Cowes Green 1920

Cowes Green 1905

The Green, undated but probably from the 20's. The building

on the right was the Grantham (see above) boathouse. (Nigh)
